Syllables

What is a syllable?

Words can be broken down into different sounds, like bicycle is spoken bi-cy-cle. Each of these different sounds is called a syllable. Every syllable has at least one vowel.

Words with one syllable are:

        Car, hen, dig, go

Words with two syllables are:

        Cray-on, mon-key, tea-cher, rab-bit, dol-phin

Words with more syllables are:

        Mag-a-zine (3), no-vem-ber(3), ham-bur-ger(3), su-per-mar-ket(4)

Breaking a word down into syllables often makes it easier to spell.
