Most people would eat foods such as bread, wine, olives and olive oil, which they would buy from markets, and hot food, which they could buy from the street sellers (thermopolium). They would often drink the wine watered down.

 

Rich people often had large dinner parties, where the guests would recline on sofas around a dining table, and the meal would go on for a long time.

The food would consist of many courses, with exotic food such as grilled swan, crow and other birds—sometimes combined in one dish! They also used a special room called a vomitorium for when they had had too much to eat.

 

Other food the Romans ate included snails and dandelion leaves and spices were popular with all people.
