Most people would wear a tunic, a simple garment made out of wool. On top of this, men wore togas (large semi circular sheet which they draped over themselves so they had one arm free) and women wore a stola or a palla. On cold days men and women would wear a cloak to keep warm. On their feet people wore leather sandals.

The toga was used to show the status of the person wearing it. Only romans that were “citizens” were allowed to wear the toga. Citizens were people with special status - normally non-slaves born in Rome - although citizenship was a privilege that could be awarded to anyone. Different people wore different types of toga to show their job or rank.
